this is a moment for jim lehrerer to be very tough, respectful tough, and for president obama to come back at him and to say, look, i'm happy to see -- your running mate said he didn't have enough time on sunday. that's too bad. that's terrible, in fact. i'm willing to cede, governor romney -- >> could jim lehrer get away with simply saying i have a little liberty here, a little leeway, i will give you all the time it takes. tell us now what tax breaks you're going to get rid of. >> tell us what tax breaks you're going goat rid of and also please, governor romney, you were very upset about the 47% of americans who pay no taxes. well, they include seniors, the military, and they include the working poor. please tell me, governor romney, exactly which groups you're going to raise federal incomes taxes on of those three groups because you don't like the fact they're not paying taxes. he's a very wonderful man, a warm man, he could be tough but respectful and i think president obama should help him out by saying i'm happy to cede some of my time so you can take the time and lay out all those deductio

's what people want. >> we can't talk about the president's strategy. he has to stay cool. if jim lehrer doesn't do it, if the moderator doesn't do, it then the president may have to step in, depending on how romney performs. but if romney doesn't really make the case strongly, the president doesn't necessarily have to jump on him. >> he can say at the end he didn't answer. >> he can say at the end he didn't answer the question. >> let lehrer try it. >> but i think the obama campaign is leery of being -- they need to be a little aggressive. they need to take -- >> what's the best defense? >> good offense. >> i would recommend the president. why did the cavalry leave the fort to fight the indians? do you know why? >> why. >> they're cavalry. thank you. >>> coming up, we have a new scoreboard. not like in the old days but spinners will be there. let's watch the power of the tweeter, the twitter, what's going to happen? we'll have people talking about real life, in time, while it's actually happening telling us who's winning this thing and which candidate did a better job framing the argume

. >> you know, tonight, jim lehrer, he's a great moderator. take all of the time you want. take my time to explain how you're going to do it. yesterday romney himself told a local denver station that part of his tax plan might include a cap on deductions at 17,000 a person which would not hurt billionaires at all like him. let's take a look. >> you could say everybody's going to get up to $17,000 deduction and you can use your charitable deduction, your home mortgage deduction or others, health care deduction and you can fill that bucket, if you will, the $17,000 bucket and higher income might have a lower number or you could do it by the same method that bowles/simpson did it, which is limiting certain deductions but that's the sort of thing that -- >> well, his tighing would take him past 17%. his spokesman made clear, this is one of the policy options romney was considering. in other words, if you want specifics, don't count on this. howard, this is the problem the more he teases it and pulls back, the more he looks like -- >> the more he teases it, the more confusion he sews and a c

weeks on that, chris. i think every debate moderator starting with jim lehrer tomorrow night is going to demand specifics in the way chris wallace tried to do last week on fox. and i also think that the numbers are emblematic of values in this case. people want to know about mitt romney. they're undecided. i disagree with chuck a little bit. i think people are prepared to blame the president enough to dismiss him if, as chuck says, they are secure about romney. it's that last piece that romney hasn't done, and forcing him to discuss the details of his tax plan is not a way necessarily to win those undecided voters at this point because i doubt that many of them like the idea of a big tax cut for millionaires. >> what do you think, chuck, of george wills' column where he says america will advance when it learns how to fire a black president, an african-american president. we haven't advanced that far. what do you make of this comment in his column today? like the orioles fired frank robinson. >> i have talked to a lot of republicans who believe that they do believe that there is a high
